We hunt for stones in the wilds of Canada, Russia, Australia, Yemen, the United States, and New Zealand, imbued with the colours and textures of the environments where they're formed. Starting in 1986 as a tiny flicker in founder John David Sheehan’s mind, we’ve grown from humble roots to become a leader in the creation of hand crafted jade carvings. While we’ve grown since those early days that John spent hunched over in his single man workshop, Mountain Jade is still run by us, the Sheehan family. Our pieces are an extension of who we are as a company and what we want to become.
We’re connected to the jade we use and love spending time in a workshop, creating something from nothing. I learnt by working with my father and being a self employed carver for over five years, but it wasn't enough. I learnt to carve jade from my father and two older brothers, John Sheehan and Joe Sheehan. We see you’re browsing from beyond our wild seas, but don’t worry, we ship worldwide.
We source our jade from New Zealand and all over the world, including Canada, Siberia, Australia and China. New Zealand’s European colonists typically refer to jade as greenstone, while Maori people call it pounamu. New Zealand jade comes in a variety of colours, including milky and yellowy mottled patches, silvery grey green stones and rich green finishes, and boasts a variety of patterns and textures. Its fibres bend before breaking, making it a hard stone that is best worked with high speed diamond cutting tools.
We see you’re browsing from beyond our wild seas, but don’t worry, we ship worldwide. Pounamu is known as the God Stone of the Maori people, and modern Maori who wish to give a gift of pounamu will always seek out New Zealand nephrite learn about the stones different names here . The symbols and patterns that you see carved into stone, wood, and bone have strong spiritual meanings. The design represents the special relationship Maori people have with fishing historically they lived from fisheries and depended on the sea for food gathering and Tangaroa, god of the sea. The koru is a modern design used extensively in Maori art, however it was rarely seen in pounamu carving before the arrival of Europeans in New Zealand. Modern manaia are said to represent spiritual power and are thought to guide human spirits to heaven
